Chicago - A message from the station manager

The [Friday] Papers

By Steve Rhodes

Every year for the past several New Year’s Eves I’ve toasted to the notion that the coming year will be better than the last because each succeeding year seems to suck harder than ever. Now I’m somewhat resigned to the fact that it’s just gonna get worse and worse. I wonder if there’s an early admittance program to that senior public housing building on Damen I’ve always had my eyes on. Because, really, I’ve had enough.
*
I am somewhat comforted by the notion that if there is an afterlife – doubtful – I’ll be treated much better than Cardinal Francis George, who has a lot to learn about people, history, society, and pastoral care. What an absolute dud.
He leads today’s quick look through the news.
*
1. Cardinal George calls Angola a KKK sanctuary.

*
So gay.
*
God’s word.
2. I hope they’re gay and they invite Cardinal George and wear white sheets.
3. But Cardinal George mad route went in front of a church.
4. “The Denver Broncos trailed the Chicago Bears 10-0 deep into the fourth quarter in their Dec. 11 home game,” the National Catholic Register reports. “Not surprisingly, Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow said a prayer on the sideline.
“But this time, a microphone picked up his petition.
“‘Dear Jesus I need you. Please come through for me. No matter what, win or lose, Lord, give me the strength to honor you,’ said Tebow in a 10-minute feature from NFL Films that gave an up-close look of the quarterback that game day.”
Cardinal George was also mic’d up that day, and was heard accusing the Bears defensive line of acting like the KKK.
5. “Folks clicking over to Occupy Chicago’s website got a shock from what looked like its sudden closure by federal agencies colluding with corporate media Hollywood, replete with official looking government logos and censorship,” The People Occupy reports. “Actually, the site’s operators shut down the site’s regular pages temporarily, and substituted the offending placeholder to demonstrate what shortly could happen if Big Media pushes through the so-called ‘Stop Online Piracy Act’ now before Congress.”
*
Site back to normal but if anyone has a screen grab of the shutdown version, I’d love to see it.
6. Excepting the fact that there hasn’t been a spike in crime, and most fire departments are probably overstaffed, this is still pretty damn good.

7. “Virtual walk-thru of the new 3340 N. Kedzie brewing facility for Revolution Beer. Created by AG Design Works, Inc. (www.agdworks.com) during the MEP-FP Coordination process, using Navisworks Manage. Based on 2D design work by WRAP Architecture (Architect of Record) with Helios Design Building (general contractor), and additional 3D content by In-Lite Electrical, EHMS HVAC, CJ Erickson Plumbing, and Newlands Systems.”

8. New Cubs GM names son after Red Sox pitcher.
*
Beats calling him Zambrano.
9. Blue Horseshoe Loves The Bears.
10. The Week in WTF.
