Chicago - A message from the station manager

The [Friday] Papers

By Steve Rhodes

It’s pretty late in the day for a column so let’s just have some fun with whatever items I can scrounge up without fully reading through the day’s news, which I haven’t gotten to yet.
1. “An Arlington Heights couple who owns a pizzeria allegedly used the business to cover up their role in a drug trafficking operation to bring heroin from Mexico to the Chicago area, officials said today,” the Tribune reports.
Officials got suspicious when deliveries began taking 30 seconds or less.

2. When Rod Blagojevich Went To Comic Con.
3.It begins in a library with 47 under siege by Chicago police. Sneaking behind cover and hanging from ledges, he takes the cops down one by one before stealing a uniform, taking a hostage, and shooting his way out.”
4. “Home for the holidays has a new meaning for Lauren McCaleb of Chicago. She’ll be spending the holidays this year in her brand new, $200,000 dream home in Arizona – her reward for winning the 2011 Taylor Morrison Dream Home Giveaway.”
5. “With sales of Macs growing at more than six times the industry average, MacMall on Saturday will give away thousands in Apple gear to customers attending the grand opening of its Huntington Beach retail store – the latest component of the reseller’s retail expansion plans that will see it move into Chicago early next year.
6. “Recent research suggests that ‘southpaws,’ a term coined by a Chicago sportswriter back in the late 1800s for left-handed pitchers in Chicago Stadium because when on the mound they faced the South Side of town, are more likely to suffer from brain disorders like dyslexia, schizophrenia and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder than right-handled people.”
7. “My wife and I are spending two nights in Chicago. If you had to choose two restaurants to represent this culinary capital, which would they be?”
8. “A stalemate between the [Chicago] company that manufactures the Oscar statuettes and its workers could amplify the drama at February’s Academy Awards if an agreement on wage and benefit disputes is not reached,” the Huffington Post reports.
9. “Charles Barkley, NBA analyst, speaker of his mind and noted yeller of outlandish things, went on the radio in Chicago and made a plea to the Chicago Bears to ‘stop the madness.'”
10. The Week in Chicago Rock.
It wasn’t a great one, I’ll be honest. But Florence and the Machine is kind of interesting.
11. The Week in Occupy Chicago.
Great stuff here, folks. And I only got to a smidgen of it.
12. The College Football Report: Guilty.
Our very own Mike Luce returns after an excused absence to issue a sentence on fans like him. Or, really, fans not so much like him.
13. Barack Obama Is 4-4-4.
Which is a relief, because that means he’s not the Antichrist.
14. The Chicago Tribune Hit My Door.
Newspapers, remembered.
15. The Week in WTF.
Blago, mittens, Santorum.

The Beachwood Tip Line: Both sooner and later.
