Chicago - A message from the station manager

By Steve Rhodes

When the Democrats in U.S. House gained a majority in 2006, Jesse Jackson Jr., who had a seat on the Appropriations Committee, made the unlikely claim that “[Now] I’m Dan Rostenkowski.”
It turns out he may have been right, though.

The [Friday] Papers

By Steve Rhodes

So this is how the week ends, with Crazy Joe Biden fulfilling a mandate to laugh his way through a debate with Cub Scout sophist Paul Ryan in order to assert Barack Obama’s manhood; J.C. Brizard out by “mutual agreement,” which means he leaves on a lie as surely as he arrived on one; Rahm Emanuel announcing a “children first” budget that has almost nothing to do with children; and Pat Quinn’s approval ratings in the dumper. Where to start?
How about here. I did not know that.

The [Thursday] Papers

By Steve Rhodes

“Mayor Rahm Emanuel [Wednesday] unveiled a new budget that he says doesn’t include new tax, fine or fee increases but contains a warning about the financial havoc the city’s looming government worker pension problem could wreak,” the Tribune reports.
“Much of the mayor’s speech is a listing of what he views as the greatest hits from his first budget last year: more efficient garbage collection, a wellness program for city workers and cracking down on those who owed money to City Hall.

News you can abuse.
1. This photo of parking meter removal would make a great poster, no?
Unfortunately, we pay whether the meters are there or in storage.
Any lawyer who can get us out of this deserves a genius grant, the keys to the city and a handicapped parking placard.

The [Monday] Papers

By Steve Rhodes

Wouldn’t it be a much better world if today was Columbo Day instead of Columbus Day?
Work with me, people. Together we can make a better day.
Here’s what’s new on the site; there won’t be a Papers column as a mission of national import calls.

The Weekend Desk Report

By Steve Rhodes

“Charles Williams – a former high-ranking Chicago Police officer with no experience in the nuts-and-bolts of snow removal or garbage collection – has been chosen by Mayor Rahm Emanuel to be the city’s $157,092-a-year Streets and Sanitation commissioner,” the Sun-Times reports.
That’s okay, a former investment banker is now running the police department.

Slouching toward Saturday.
1. “More than 2,000 deer in 76 Illinois counties likely have died from a virus that often kills the animals but poses no risk to humans,” the Daily Herald reports.
Still, I don’t feel so well.

The [Thursday] Papers

By Steve Rhodes

“During the debate, Emanuel fiddled with his fingernails, pulled up his socks multiple times and appeared to stifle a yawn or two when Romney was talking,” the Sun-Times reports
I’m not sure which would be worse: This story idea originating within the Sun-Times newsroom or City Hall.
