Chicago - A message from the station manager

The [Thursday] Papers

By Steve Rhodes
It’s been a busier re-entry week than I expected so I only have time for a short column today. We’ll get everything cranked back up to full speed around here soon enough.
1. When the Sun-Times first reported this fairly weak tale of a scorned lover, I couldn’t quite figure out what made it newsworthy outside of the fact that she has some association with WGN.
But the woman’s blogging on the subject is phenomenal. I’ll leave it to you decide just how. For best results, start with the linked entry and proceed to each “newer post.” (Thanks, Matt)
UPDATE 10:41 A.M.: Looks like she’s taken down the posts that generated so much interest – too much interest for her tastes. “[S]pare me the interest in what’s going on in the life of another,” she writes. Stop reading my blog!

2. “Facebook was the #1 most-visited site on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day this year, beating Google.com for the first time,” ReadWriteWeb reports. (via paidContent)
3. Todd Stroger tells Mary Mitchell that he’s a good administrator but poor at politics and public relations – on the same day that the Sun-Times reports that Stroger called a meeting with African-American media leaders and then failed to show up.
4. “The charge? How about possession of a controlled sausage?”
5. Bob Schillerstrom vows to serve just one term if he’s elected governor, and somehow I believe that’s exactly what would happen.
*
In a bit of one-upsmanship, Andy McKenna vowed to serve just half a term as governor and Jim Ryan reportedly huddled with advisers to discuss vowing to not serve at all if elected.
6. The Sun-Times’s odd endorsement today of Pat Quinn in the Democratic primary comes straight from Bizarro world, particularly the parts claiming that “Pat Quinn is an open book,” “Quinn deserves high marks for opening up government,” and “Quinn has jump-started a government that had ground to a halt.” In what universe? I thought about reading it for a second time to make sure it wasn’t written ironically, but then I realized that irony is beyond the Sun-Times’s ken.
7. I recently chided Beachwood college football correspondent Mike Luce for complaining about the quality of Wi-Fi service he had to endure on a recent flight. I was just amazed that you could get the Internet on a moving airplane high above Earth. I still can’t get over the telephone. Mike sent me this: Everything’s Amazing & Nobody’s Happy.
8. I talked to Outside the Loop Radio this week about my recent NBCChicago.com saga; the show goes up today.
9. A Beachwood bow to Andre Dawson.
10. Another Dawson memory.
