Chicago - A message from the station manager

The [Monday] Papers

By Steve Rhodes
1. Kot and DeRo’s mix tapes of the decade.
2. Australia in Review. By The Angry Aussie Of Humboldt Park.
3. “I don’t think Lovie’s job was ever in jeopardy.”
Lou Canellis on Good Day Chicago this morning.
Please.
“If you’re not going to have Lovie Smith as your coach, who’s going to be the coach?” Canellis continued.
I know. There is absolutely no one else out there.
They beat Detroit, folks. The Beachwood bar staff could beat Detroit.

Rosenbloom has it right.

4. How a front-page article about critics of health insurance mandates can fail to mention that candidate Barack Obama not only campaigned against them but positively railed against Hillary Clinton’s stance in favor of them is beyond me. Did you simply forget, Tribune? You could have just had Obama argue both sides instead of making all those phone calls.
5. “Even as convention business has plummeted, the number of people on the payroll of the government agency that runs McCormick Place and Navy Pier who are paid more than $100,000 a year has grown,” the Sun-Times reports.
Those in a position to do so will always take care of themselves first, even while calling on others to sacrifice – sometimes with their jobs.
6. How a case of vodka wholesaling for $5.79 ends up costing $61.79 at the liquor store.

7. “Why is it that the only metric the Chicago media can use to determine whether or not the Chicago Police Department is doing a ‘good job’ is the number of homicides?” Tracy Siska of the Chicago Justice Project writes. “Near the end of every year there are reports in the media about whether the number of homicides has increased or decreased, 2009 was no different – see Frank Main’s Sun-Times story & Annie Sweeney’s Chicago Tribune story. Should we really only be concentrating on homicide rates to determine whether or not an urban police agency is doing a good job? What’s missing? How are communities being disserved by this PR-driven obsession the Chicago media has with homicides? I have a couple of ideas.”
8. Andy Shaw of the Better Government Association just described (on Good Day Chicago Pat Quinn as “honest as the day is long.”
Apparently Shaw has not been paying attention.
9. Great, Daley gets to fill another city council vacancy. But what’s in it for Flores? Statewide exposure as a prelude to a federal campaign?
10. “The [parking meter] concession contract calls for rate increases for the first five years of the agreement, with potential cost of living increase[s] after that,” the Parking Ticket Geek reports.
11. Hey, would everyone shut up about having Jay Cutler roll out more? Having Cutler roll out more next season is absolutely not the answer,” our very own Jim Coffman writes in SportsMonday. “Do people who get paid to write about football and talk about football in this town actually study the game at all?”
12. The items in our Trivial Pursuit feature are always tasty, but today’s additions are even more so . . . remember, read from the bottom if you want the latest. Yes, it’s a nuisance, but there is a reason why the feature developed this way that you needn’t know about.
13. NYE Chicago.
