Chicago - A message from the station manager

The [Friday] Papers

By Steve Rhodes

I will be out on business today, so there won’t be a new Papers column. Speaking of business, however, The Beachwood Reporter‘s one-year anniversary is this week, so I’ll leave you with some links to stories from our very first week, as well as some links from current offerings that are worth your time. And many, many, many thanks to everyone who has supported this project and, in particular, our members, who have helped keep us alive.
Also: we are still looking for the right person to fill the post of business manager, not just for the BR, but for new sites to be launched this year. Business experience not necessarily required; the position will oversee advertising and marketing. The job can be as large as someone wants, or divided into smaller pieces depending. Compensation for now is restricted to possible revenue-sharing and/or stock. We’re still an all-volunteer operation, after all. But if you help us change that, you will be rewarded.
And now . . . one-year ago in the Beachwood.

*Chicago in Song: (Mostly) A Wretched Place.” From Mac Davis to the Doors, it’s not pretty.
*The Little Giant Ladder.” It’s really 24 ladders in one – it’s like having an entire garage of ladders.
*Cub Fan, Bad Man.” Was fun-loving Harry Caray actually a miserable human being? Excerpts from Steve Stone’s book sure make it seem that way.
*Tribune Air.” Where red-eye flights are short and stupid. Also, the unique characteristics of Daley Air, Blago Air, and Beachwood Air.
*Cab #1717.” We forget what true cleanliness smells like. This cab reminds you.
*Poll Positions: The Daley Skew.” Seventy percent of voters polled don’t believe the mayor when he says he wasn’t aware of criminal wrongdoing in city hiring. But the papers refuse to say voters therefore think the mayor is a liar.
*The [Tuesday] Papers.” While the Daley poll story was our first stab at our front-page news roundup, this was the first to use the Papers moniker. At the time, naming a street after slain Black Panther Fred Hampton was the big story.

Street Team
Our readership has grown with every month of our existence. But it’s a big market and we need more of it. Spread the word at every turn; send our stories to sites that might like to link to them; and ask us for promotional materials to litter your neighborhood with.
And don’t be shy: calling talk radio to drop the Beachwood’s name, for example, is highly encouraged. As are mass e-mails promoting our work, as long as you don’t try to sell penis enlargement at the same time. Unless we get a cut.
