“Chicago’s Modern Vices call what they do ‘dirty doo-wop’ which probably has more to do with the sonics than the lyrical content.”

“This is track 2 from the 1962 album The Greater Harvest Baptist Church of Chicago, IL. Rev. Louis Boddie was born in Nesbit, Mississippi, but in early childhood his parents moved to Memphis, TN. It was in Memphis that he attended school and grew into manhood. He started working for the Illinois Central Railroad at a very early age and stayed there 17 years. He then moved to Chicago and worked at the Swift Packing House. Four years prior he had been called into the ministry to preach the Word.
“Out of this calling the Greater Harvest Baptist Church was born on April 10, 1920 at 4419 State St. He then moved to 4512 South State St. where the membership grew immensely and caused the congregation to move to 4711 South State St. to the old Atlas Theater and remained there until 1925. Services were then held in a tent from 1925 to 1927. A frame structure was built around the tent and finally converted into a wooden structure located at 4546 South Dearborn St. It was later changed to a brick building.
“From this location was originated the radio broadcast from WAAF in 1945. The membership grew so large that it was necessary to buy a larger church. In 1948, a building was purchased at 5121 and 25 South State St. having a seating capacity of 2500. A community center and home for unfortunate mothers and children was also constructed there.
“Curious is the fact that his is the first head stone visible, directly to the right, when you first enter Restvale Cemetery. The headstone, a large rock has engraved “JESUS IS MY ROCK.” Fact is, Rev Boddie was known for his quote, “JESUS IS MY ROCK.” Although a pastor to many famed persons including Gospel singers Mahalia Jackson, Albertina Walker and Shirley Caesar his focus was serving humanity through such acts as feeding 3 meals a day to the less fortunate, supplying clothes and shelter to those in need, when needed and the gift of healing the sick. He indeed loved God and humanity.”
