Local Book Notes: Jesus Lizard, Eliot Ness & The Pope

Plus: Name That Graffiti

1. Chicago Tag Book.
“A Blackbook with several tags and signatures mostly from Chicago, with a few international heads. 2006 – 2013.”

2. Jesus Lizard Wrote A Book.
“We’re in David Yow’s secret and literally-underground bunker in Los Angeles eating some of his homemade habanero salsa with tortilla chips he’s imported from his favorite spot in Chicago when the now-bearded Jesus Lizard frontman kicks up his trusty cowboy boots and starts telling us about one of his most useful talents: Pissing while walking – without getting a drop on his pants,” J. Bennett writes at Vice music blog Noisey.
“There’s more than one story about Yow urinating publicly – and getting drunk, naked and occasionally injured – in the new Jesus Lizard book, which is cleverly entitled The Jesus Lizard Book. The impressive coffee-table tome tells the story of one of the most powerful and unhinged rock bands of the 1990s, including in-depth recollections from all four Jesus Lizard members – Yow, bassist David Wm. Sims, guitarist Duane Denison and drummer Mac McNeilly – about their sweaty, balls-out journey through the American underground and beyond.”
3. Gets His Man.
“Douglas Perry’s Eliot Ness: The Rise and Fall of an American Hero is a fine little biography of a man who doesn’t really deserve one.”
4. Great Expectations.
“New research from Amanda Sharkey of the University of Chicago Booth School of Business finds that a book read after winning a prestigious award will likely be judged more negatively than if it’s read in its pre-award days.”
5. Papal Press.
“A Chicago Roman Catholic press says it has beat out the nation’s top publishing houses for the rights to produce the North American English translation of the first sweeping collection of Pope Francis’ words since he became pontiff,” the Tribune reports.
“Loyola Press, the publishing arm of the Chicago-area Jesuits, expects to publish The Church of Mercy, a compilation of essays, speeches and homilies written by Pope Francis since his election, in time for Easter.”
