About The Tribune’s New E-Book Initiative

By Agate Publishing

I’m writing to announce the full-fledged launch of the Chicago Tribune Ebook Collection, a fast-growing library of standalone ebooks published by Agate Digital and created from the Chicago Tribune’s archive of news, feature stories, columns, and photography. We believe this ebook effort – which is now generating an average of seven new ebooks per month – represents one of the biggest and most ambitious forays into ebook publishing by any major newspaper company to date.
The scale of the project is made possible by the sheer breadth of material in the Tribune’s archive, which allows Tribune and Agate editors to develop ebooks on a diverse range of topics. Among these new books are a “best of” collection by Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist Mary Schmich; a retrospective on former Mayor Richard M. Daley; and a variety of cookbooks drawn from the Tribune’s “Good Eating” section. These ebooks are very attractively priced at just $4.99, designed to appeal to the broad (and fast-growing) audience of readers embracing the ebook format on their digital and mobile devices.

The Tribune Ebook Collection is produced in partnership with Agate Digital, an imprint of Chicago’s Agate Publishing. The ebooks are distributed in all of the major ebook formats and are available from all of the major e-retailers. To see the current selection of ebooks available in the Tribune Ebook Collection, visit chicagotribuneebooks.com or agatepublishing.com/catalog/chicagotribune/.
I have attached a press release with more information.

The Chicago Tribune and Agate Digital are pleased to announce the launch of the Chicago Tribune Ebook Collection, a wide-ranging and fast-growing library of standalone ebooks created from Tribune news and features stories, columns and photography. The broad assortment of titles delves into current affairs, biography, sports, cooking and other topics, drawing on contemporary material as well as the Tribune’s deep archives.
Agate Digital, an imprint of Evanston-based Agate Publishing, and Tribune have published approximately two dozen ebooks since the partnership began in spring and expect to complete 50 by the end of 2012. Among the titles are Charlie Trotter, a fast-paced personal history of the culinary superstar; The Best of Mary Schmich, the Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist’s own favorite pieces; and Capone, never-before-published photographs of the infamous Jazz Age gangster.
A regularly updated list of ebooks can be found at chicagotribuneebooks.com.
Forthcoming books will cover the Cubs, White Sox, Bulls and Blackhawks; holiday recipes; the Rev. Jesse Jackson and his son U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr.; city guidebooks; exclusive photos of the 1933 “Century of Progress” World’s Fair; and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
The Chicago Tribune Ebook Collection is available everywhere ebooks are sold, in all major ebook formats, for all prominent reading devices. Most are offered at a base list price of $4.99. Many are brief and compelling narratives, well suited to mobile devices, while others are comprehensive compilations on particular subjects.
“The Tribune’s vast archive of excellent reporting and photography are a perfect vehicle for experimenting with ebooks,” said Doug Seibold, president of Agate. “We’re able to publish ebooks at a very fast clip that are affordable and easily accessible to a wide range of readers, and we look forward to bringing out many more such books.”
