Occupy Crete
“Elected officials in Crete claim they’re worried about protesters from Chicago’s NATO Summit invading their quiet suburb next month,” Phil Kadner writes in the SouthtownStar.
“That’s the excuse they’re using for proposing an ordinance that would require organizers of any public protest to purchase $5 million in insurance, obtain a parade permit in advance and pay for security costs of $70 an hour for a police car and $200 an hour for a village fire truck.”
Even protest is being privatized.

“CEO Jeff Smisek saw his compensation soar to $14.7 million last year from $4.4 million in 2010 as United Continental Holdings Inc. completed its first full year as a merged airline,” Crain’s reports.
And how well did Smisek manage the merger?
“The parent of United Airlines lost $448 million in the first quarter as it dealt with higher fuel prices and hiccups in its integration with Continental Airlines,” AP reports.
If only United’s losses reached $500 million – Smisek may have made even more!

“A northwest suburban man was at the center of a fracas in New York that landed drunken Detroit Tigers left fielder Delmon Young in jail early Friday on a hate-crime charge, authorities said,” the Sun-Times reports.
“Shank and three companions were entering the hotel after giving $25 to a Jewish panhandler wearing a yarmulke and Star of David.
“Young then shouted ‘fucking Jew,’ prompting Shank’s group to tell the ballplayer to calm down, police said.”

“A man pulled over by Naperville police for going 111 mph in a 45 mph zone told the officer he was in a hurry because he was ‘trying to go have sex with a girl he liked,’ police said,” the Naperville Sun reports.
He only drives 110 to have sex with girls he doesn’t like.
