Is David Attenborough Helping?

By Darío Fernández-Bellon/The Conversation

Expectations are high for the BBC’s new series Seven Worlds, One Planet, but do nature documentaries do enough for the environment?
The BBC and David Attenborough have been criticized for side-stepping environmental issues and portraying the natural world as a pristine wilderness in their shows.
Even the recent Netflix series Our Planet – which went further to highlight climate change, habitat loss and species extinctions – shied away from depicting the true scale of these problems, according to some viewers.

CNN’s John King Wonders If AOC, Tlaib And Omar Endorsements Are ‘Too Urban’ To Help Sanders

By Jake Johnson/Common Dreams

CNN anchor John King faced swift backlash Tuesday night for pondering on national television whether endorsements from progressive Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib are “too far-left,” “too urban,” and “too internet” to help U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders in the 2020 Democratic presidential primary.
“They are more of the younger, fresher face,” King said of the congresswomen during a CNN panel discussion following Tuesday evening’s presidential debate in Ohio. “More aggressive, more liberal. Less compromising. Less talk about working with Republicans.”

Ellen DeGeneres’s Bullshit Takedown

By The Electronic Freedom Foundation

It’s legitimately amazing that famous people and companies keep doing this. They keep using the DMCA to take down criticism, which always makes them look even worse than they did when the criticism was allowed to be seen. Does no one in Hollywood know about the Streisand Effect?
Comedian and talk show host Ellen DeGeneres was photographed at a football game with former U.S. president George W. Bush. This sparked a debate about Bush’s legacy and whether being friendly to someone amounts to endorsing their actions. DeGeneres addressed the debate on her show, The Ellen Show.
Rafael Shimunov re-edited that portion of the show so that, instead of photos from the football game appearing behind DeGeneres, photos from Iraq War were shown instead. It’s a pretty clear case of re-editing a video in the interests of criticizing and commenting on the original. It’s also only 1:47 minutes long.
The edited video was published to Twitter, and the original posting now displays the classic “This video has been removed in response to a report from the copyright holder” message.

The Real Dirty Dancing Erases The Film’s Politics

By Jessica Ford and Phoebe Macrossan/The Conversation

It’s 1963. Frances “Baby” Houseman (Jennifer Grey) is a college-bound teenager staying at Kellerman’s Mountain Lodge with her family. Johnny Castle (Patrick Swayze) is a dance instructor at the resort – and Baby’s love interest.
Dirty Dancing is one of those films almost everyone has at least some knowledge of, even if only second-hand. It is therefore not surprising it has inspired a reality TV show: The Real Dirty Dancing.
At the “real Kellerman’s” resort in Virginia, B-list Australian celebrities take dancing lessons, visit set locations, and reminisce about the movie.

Why Do TV News Shows Book Interviews With People Who Lie?

By Michael Socolow/The Conversation

First, it happened on Fox News.
Chris Wallace asked White House adviser Stephen Miller about the president’s decision to use private lawyers “to get information from the Ukrainian government rather than go through . . . agencies of his government.”

Miller’s response began, “Two different points – ” when Wallace cut him off.
“How about answering my question?” Wallace asked. Miller, changing the subject, ignored Wallace.
Miller never answered Wallace’s question.
