Pretty Pennies And Coin Nuts

"A 1792-dated copper cent has sold for US$1.15 million, a U.S. auction house said Friday," AFP reports.

"The experimental coin with a silver center was one of the first ever struck at the United States mint and is one of just 14 known to have survived.

"It was purchased in 1974 for $105,000 and was sold to a dealer representing a group of investors at an auction held in conjunction with the annual Central States Numismatic Society convention being held in a Chicago suburb."

That suburb would be Schaumburg. There is also an important show this month in Rosemont. Let's take a look.

"The April 18-20 official auction of the Central States Numismatic Society Convention [took place] in Schaumburg, IL, featuring The William D. Plumley Collection of proof gold, a rare Civil War tokens collection and numerous rarities spanning the breadth of American numismatic history," Coin Week reports.

"The world coin collecting community will gather at the Crowne Plaza O'Hare April 24-29 as the 37th annual Chicago International Coin Fair comes to the Windy City," Coin Week reports.

"CICF is one of the most popular conventions in the U.S. serving the interests of collectors and dealers of world coins and paper money, as well as ancient coins, antiquities and allied collectibles."

"An extraordinary Brazilian Pedro I gold Coronation 6,400 Reis of 1822R, just one of 64 minted, provides a historic and emotional anchor to the 5,300-plus-lot Heritage Auctions' World & Ancient Coins CICF Signature® Auction, April 26-30, at the Crowne Plaza O'Hare, in Rosemont, Ill. It is expected to bring more than $100,000," NumisMaster reports.

"The auction will take place in a total of six sessions across six days, starting with Ancient Coins on Wednesday, April 25, followed by four floor sessions of World Coins, Thursday-Saturday, April 26-28, and closing with two days of Non-Floor sessions of more than 2,500 lots on Monday, April 30 and Tuesday, May 1."
