Chicagoetry: Sad Eyed Lady of the Northwoods

Sad Eyed Lady of the Northwoods

Something in the way
she grieved

attached to me like
sin on skin.

Beyond her Mercury mouth
and Venus eyes
was a sadness, a black mass
of blues and lies

which shook me,
and shut the skies.

For this sad eyed lady
I would wait,
ego undaunted
by the wisps,

the whispers
of fate.

I was so cool
I could heal by grace
with a warm hand
on a soft face.

Jesus! The ego!
Heroic malaise!

Sure my tawdry shield
could fill the space
between the copses of joy
and the city's menace

I offered my levity
as some kind of deity.

Well: gravity had something
to say about that.
We tumbled together
through all vagaries of weather,

coupling, separating,
reuniting, fighting,

grasping for equilibrium,
ego ergo sum.

City life and country lust
pummel the best of us.
And we stumbled,
my shield rent asunder.

I awoke in a field, alone,
still feeling her sin

on my skin.
And I will wait.
